Phonics

Phase 1 Phonics

In Nursery, we focus on Phase 1 phonics which teach the underlying, foundational skills needed for reading and writing. Even if a child already knows the names or sounds letters make, these prerequisite skills are essential to give them the best start to their reading and writing journey. Phase 1 is divided into seven areas which are outlined below along with ideas of activities you could do at home. These aspects are designed to be 'dipped into' rather than taught in any particular order, with the exception of Aspect 7 which tends to be taught later once the children have had lots of practice of Aspects 1-6 and are developing good phonological awareness.
