Water Safety

☀️ Keeping Our Children Safe Around Water This Summer

Following a fantastic recent visit from a local lifeguard, our pupils have been learning how to stay safe around water. As the summer holidays approach, we want to share the core life-saving messages with our parents and carers to ensure everyone enjoys a fun and safe summer.

🛑 The 4 Critical Rules of Water Safety
  • Stop and Think: Look for water safety signs at beaches and pools before letting children enter.
  • Stay Together: Never let children swim alone; always supervise them closely from the bank or pool edge.
  • Float to Live: If a child falls into cold water, they must not panic or swim. They should lean back, extend their arms and legs, and float like a starfish until they control their breathing.
  • Call 999: If someone is in trouble, do not enter the water to save them. Call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard (at the beach) or the Fire Service (inland).

🏡 Hidden Hazards at Home and in Public
  • Paddling Pools: Empty them completely immediately after use and store them upside down.
  • Inflatables: Avoid using toy dinghies or lilos in the sea, as offshore winds can rapidly pull children out to deep water.
  • Open Water: Avoid rivers, quarries, and lakes; under-surface currents and cold-water shock can overpower even strong swimmers.

Our Years 3 & 4 very much enjoyed their visit from a lifeguard from Nuffield House who talked to them about Drowning Prevention.
