We started our autumn poetry unit: A small dragon. The children have been working really well in writing their own first verse, using the original poem as a scaffolding.  We started with finding different habitats our dragon could have come from and then thought of our own animal, where it could have come from, what it looks like and what reflects in its eyes.

This week, we finished our Science unit 'Animals including Humans' and had our last lesson about the digestion system. We made an experiment, and tried to understand what precisely the role of the small and large instestines are. We recreated this with tights!

 

 

The children were excited, but also a little bit grossed out!

Today, they also received their roles for the Kingfisher's class assembly and brought their script home, ready to learn their lines over 1/2 term.

This week, the children participated in our International Week, visiting different countries each day: Germany, France, China, South Africa and Vietnam.

Before boarding  their first flight of our week, 

to Germany, they had to pass security and passport control.

In each classroom, the children engaged with several different activities. In Germany, we matched German cars to their logos, answered football questions and compared Disney and Brothers Grimm Fairy tales, learnt how to say 'Good morning, my name is... ' in German and started counting to 5. We also discovered all the amazing things that are 'typical' German, like Christmas trees, glue sticks and whole punchers .... who knew?!

This week, we have started planning our persuasive speech, inspired by the book 'The King who banned the dark' and children came up with their own topic, which they are passionate about. We have had a big selection of different topics:

• environmental
• class pet
• animal cruelty 
• school meals

Our history topic this week was Boudicca, and we read the only recount there is about her from Cassius Dio:

She was a tall woman, with piercing eyes and a loud voice.  A great mass of red hair hung down below her waist.  Round her neck was a large gold torc (like  a really thick necklace made to look like a metal rope). She wore a full, flowing tartan dress, and over it was a cloak, fastened by a brooch.

The children took this description and painted their individual interpretation of Boudicca. They are all looking forward to showing you their work during next week's Learn & Share.

We finalised our enamel/eggshell experiment. Over the past week kept four hard boiled eggs in four different liquids and observed the effect of them on the eggshell which represents the enamel of the tooth.

In Literacy, we started our new unit 'The King who banned the dark' and we worked on our debate techniques: opinion, evidence, response. The children did really well and came up with excellent arguments to support 'we should ban the dark' or 'we shouldn't ban the dark'.

Our first trip to St Albans Cathedral for a Roman Festival was amazing. We participated in three different workshops. One was the 'St Albans Trail', where we walked the path of St Albans and recreated his historic steps. Then we had a 'Blanket Dig', exploring different historic objects and our final workshop was our 'Roman Food' preparation and testing activity.
